The sun has come out at last...

15.5.2017
Since arriving in Spain a strong southerly wind accompanied with a lot of downpours and even thunderstorms has been dominating the situation. Our progress has been halted for a week now. We have just been able to sail from Camariñas to Muros (45NM further south) one day when there was a lull in the southerlies.

At least it gave us time to plan our next moves towards Lagos or perhaps Portimāo, just a few miles further east from Lagos. Looking at the general situation it seems that from tomorrow, the wind will finally become what is known as the nortada,  or as the Portuguese trades from the north.

At least until next Monday, we can expect to get a good ride southwards.
As we only have another two weeks left before we have to return to the U.K. for a couple of weeks we need to get a move on. We decided to sail overnight to Leixoēs (110NM) just a few miles north of the entrance to the river Douro and Porto. Whether we have time to visit Porto depends on the wind.

Muros is a gorgeous town with many very old stone buildings dating back to the XIII century, cobble stoned streets, flower baskets hanging from balconies and many friendly shops and restaurants. We have enjoyed the few days we have spent here waiting. I have been struck by the friendly welcome that we received from everyone so far. I even got a warm hug from the harbourmaster in both, Camariñas and Muros (perhaps they enjoy hugging female sailors?). This would be unthinkable in northern Europe.

The sun has come out today at last. It is nice and warm as we imagined all along. Tomorrow morning we will leave.
