Madeleine Strobel’s career as an artist began in 1984 when she graduated from the School of Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art (BA Hons). She has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions and is part of several artists’ exhibiting groups.
Madeleine Strobel is a visual artist. Her work has two distinct strands: Drawing and Painting on one side, and Books and Paper Structures on the other.
In drawing and painting, landscape is Madeleine’s chosen subject matter and, as an avid sailor, her work is particularly inspired by the magnificent sea and sky. More recently, she has explored the undergrowth of Hampstead Heath where she spends a lot of her time.
Madeleine also experiments with, and creates works on paper that incorporate debris and flotsam that she finds on the shore - including rusty metal and seaweed. She learnt paper making while studying at Edinburgh College of Art. She also visited the traditional paper making village in Kurotani in Japan - after having won a travelling scholarship in Edinburgh in 1983.
During Madeleine’s long painting career, she has had solo exhibitions in the UK, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium and Venezuela and was invited to international symposiums in the United States and the Azores.
Her work is included in public collections:
City of Edinburgh Council (Jean F. Watson Bequest)
Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Caracas
John Radcliffe Hospital (Green College, Oxford)
International Maritime Organisation
London and ArtUK (UCL collection)
In London, from 1987, Madeleine worked in Carpenters Road Studios (run by ACME) in East London and in Park Studios in Finsbury Park.
She moved to Devon in 2004, where she lived and worked until she returned to London in 2019. Now she is back in her studio in Finsbury Park.
Madeleine’s work in Devon has been exhibited at the Artmill Gallery in Plymouth and the Limekiln Gallery in Calstock. Since joining the 21 Group of artists in 2006, her work has been included in many group exhibitions in Totnes, Dartington, Plymouth, St. Ives and beyond. Together with the ArtSix group she has been taking part in the South Hams Arts Trail for several years running.
Madeleine Strobel was born in Venezuela, daughter of Czech parents. She has had a wonderfully international/peripatetic life having spent her first ten years in South America, before moving to Europe. She spent another ten years in Switzerland, where she completed schooling before moving to Germany in 1971. Madeleine then moved to Scotland in 1980, where she enrolled at Edinburgh College of Art and graduated (BA Hons Painting) in 1984.
During this time, Madeleine’s principal tutors were Elizabeth Blackadder, John Houston and George Donald. The City of Edinburgh Council purchased one of Madeleine’s large charcoal drawings during her degree show.
Madeleine has been a practising artist ever since.
