14/06/09 To Terschelling and the Waddenmeer

Terschelling has one the most circuitous entrance routes we have ever come across. The many channels must be followed because of the Wadden and the ‘riddle of the sands’. Despite all this, even big and fast ferries use this route frequently.

Terschelling provided a welcome surprise. It was full of buzz due to a ten day festival called ‘Oerol’. It is an annual event with music, arts and performance and the busiest week of the year. The population increases tenfold (40000). It is also a place to meet for the well known Dutch flat bottomed barges and the particular culture of their crews. The harbour and marina were full. This however did not deter anybody from squeezing in. The more the merrier – especially since it is always the inner boat of the pack which wants to leave the earliest. Very interesting manoeuvres to watch, not necessarily to repeat.
