Arholma – beautiful wooded island and relic of the Cold War

1st of June

Easy Rider at the pier
A lovely 52 NM sail from Wasahamn in Stockholm took us to this picturesque and history laden island.
This time the harbour was empty and serene as we expected…
What is in there? Binoculars!
We could not leave this beautiful spot without having at least a sauna and for this we walked to the northern tip through (mosquito-ridden) woods. Here we discovered the meaning of the Swedish word ‘Batteri’ which in this case was a Cold War fortification amongst rocks and woods with remaining hard ware. Apparently the last shot was fired in 1983.
After exploration of this site, we had our well deserved wood-fired sauna and a very brief dip into the rather cold waters (10ºC).

The perfect way to relax: a sauna hut and deck chairs on the beach
